Jewish Learning Retreats

Moishe House Jewish Learning and Leadership Retreats are multi-day, immersive learning experiences that train Jewish young adults worldwide in ritual and program skills. They are:

  • Immersive: Enter a new (head)space that’s away from the everyday.
  • Inclusive: Learn in a truly pluralistic environment – no judgements or prerequisites.
  • Interactive: Learn while DOING, through hands-on sessions taught by incredible Jewish educators.
  • Implementable: We focus on teaching TANGIBLE skills which will serve you in your role as a Jewish leader – Moishe House and beyond.
In short, Moishe House Retreats are a place to learn how to be “youish” – Jewish in a way that makes sense for you!

There are two main types of Retreats:

  • Staff-Led (led by a Moishe House staff person and guest educators)
  • Peer-Led (led by a trained facilitator who participated in our Retreatology program).

See below for a calendar and descriptions of upcoming staff-led Retreats.

Shavuot is the Jewish foundational story of exploring identity in the middle of exile, framing our destiny on a journey to a promised land. The powerful connection between ethics, land and community has shaped us from the biblical wilderness - to the communities we build nowadays in our living rooms. Join us to explore and join this legacy of action! Together we'll create unique Shavuot programs to root our 2024 celebration in centuries of Jewish conversations and movements. Come connect with community-builders from all over the region, as well as stellar educators and MH staff!

Shabbat is a powerful Jewish practice based in our deeply-rooted need for rest and renewal, but how that looks in your life may shift from week to week, and year to year. This weekend, you’re invited to join our Moishe House retreat where we are going to be exploring the underlying meaning of traditional Shabbat rituals, learning how to create new rituals that meet our modern needs, and testing out what we come up with.

What can we learn from Germany in a time of rising global antisemitism? How has the Holocaust and Germany’s Nazi past shaped the country’s role on the world stage and its relationship with its Jewish community?

Join Moishe House in Germany June 17-25 for an exclusive trip for Moishe House alumni (community builders, MHWOW hosts, Camp Nai and retreat participants). In partnership with Germany Close Up, we will tackle these questions through a visit to a former concentration camp, meetings with members of the German Federal Foreign Office, and experiences with the local Jewish community. The trip will be based out of Berlin, Germany’s capital and a hub of artists, musicians, and tech talent.

Trip participants must be or become members of Moishe House’s Ambassador Circle. You can become a member by making a $180 donation. The trip is only open to participants from North America.

The subject of Israel tends to be a particularly difficult topic to handle and Moishe House is a space where community building can-and-should happen along those fractured lines. But how can we embrace complexity and rigor without shying away from the unknown or the controversial? How do we lead our peers to address subjects that we ourselves don’t completely understand? How can we articulate the issues that divide us and interact with them and each other in a way that builds community?

Moishe House Residents, MHWOW Hosts and alumni are invited to engage in Israel dialogue through the 4 Hatikvah questions. The aim of this 3-day learning retreat is to equip Moishe House residents and MHWOW hosts with the foundational knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to create and facilitate meaningful programs about Israel for their community.

As part of participation in this Learning Retreat, you must facilitate 3 programs in your local community that explore the Hatikvah Questions.

What is 4HQ?
The 4HQ framework serves as a template to guide meaningful conversations about Israel, even (and especially) with a divided audience. Additionally, the 4HQ framework is a way to listen to Israel conversations, break them down and, think clearly about Israel issues.
