Eszter Susán
I was born in Salgotarjan, northern Hungary, and raised in a secular environment. However, my ties to Judaism established early after visiting some Talmud torah, visiting Israel - and my grandmother's love for books. According to my family tree that goes back to 1526 I am descendant of a rabbi-family from the city of Ulm, southern Germany. I am actually related to the famous Rabbi Akiba Eger, whom one of the few kosher wines available in Hungary is named after.
I studied Aesthetics and German Literature and Linguistics.
My family name is pronounced Shushan - just like the Persian city where the story of Esther has taken place. However, at the time of naming me my parents were not aware of the story of Eszter hamalcha, posing the question of "naming" and "chance versus fate" in my life as early as the age of 10, when one of my classmates informed me I appear in the Bible.
I lived in Israel for one year, and returned to Budapest in 2001 since when I am active in Marom Budapest and Siraly alternative JCC as a Jewish activist on the field of culture and informal education. I work at the JDC, Hungary as coordinator of community development projects.
I am active in the Hungarian Jewish community since 2001 fighting for the re-invention and re-creation of Jewish life.
I lived and studied in Berlin for three years between 2004-2007. I wrote my thesises on Walter Benjamin (City and remembrance) and on "Language and Sexuality in the work of the contemporary (Tschech)German-Jewish writer Maxim Biller.
