Movie Screening - 9500 Liberty - (6/15/2010)

We partnered with the local SEIU, Jews United Justice, the Young Leaders of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society an Moishe House Silver Spring to screen this documentary, which focuses on the issue of immigration and how it affected nearby Prince William County. One of the filmmakers, two characters from the film, an a representative from SEIU were on hand to answer questions and talk about the issue after the movie.

Global Hunger Shabbat - (3/19/2010)

In partnership with AJWS, Avodah, and the Cornell DC Jewish alumni group, we organized a Shabbat potluck dinner focused on hunger, both globally and right here in our own city. We featured community members, including a local blogger who focuses on initiatives that help low income people access fresh foods through farmers markets and such. It was a great, awareness raising event!

Haiti Shabbat - (2/12/2010)

Who else can say they had the winner of the Haitian version of American Idol at their house playing Bob Marley and warming the hearts of everyone with his 18 year old wisdom and talent!? Not many! We had an amazing event with Rosemond, an 18 year old singer from Haiti and representatives from both USAID and AJWS who talked about relief efforts in Haiti. We raised over $150 for AJWS!!

Movie on Moishe’s Monster Screen – Waltz with Bashir - (12/20/2009)

We cooked cooking Yemeni-Jewish/Israeli food of the gods malawach, and watched and discussed the critically-acclaimed film Waltz with Bashir (2008), a striking Israeli animated documentary written and directed by Ari Folman. The film was conceived as a journey in search of Folman's lost memories from the 1982 Lebanon War.

Round Challah Baking Class - (9/13/2009)

We enjoyed an afternoon of baking Challah with Eli Winkelman, the founder of Challah for Hunger. She taught us about challah from a health perspectice (the recipe she used was vegan) and from a religious one. She taught us how to make amazing challah and about her organization, which bakes challah and donates proceeds to Darfur awareness through AJWS.

Moishe Movie on the Move - (7/30/2009)

Turn Left at the End of the World, at the Washington DCJCC. The year is 1969. Into a small town in the Israeli desert, inhabited mostly by Moroccan immigrants, come a few Indian families who have immigrated to Israel seeking a better life in the West. The Indians, who think of themselves as British, find themselves embroiled in a culture war with the Moroccans, who consider themselves French and look down on the darker-skinned Indians. A captivating mix of old enemies, cultural mine fields, the very British game of cricket, teenage girls and the sexual revolution of the Sixties ensue in this award-winning film. Film followed by panel discussion and a Tel Aviv café reception. Free!

Ethics and Kashrut - (3/8/2009)

What is ethical Kashrut? Does Kashrut extend to the treatment of workers who process, prepare and deliver our food? What standards are necessary and which ones can be sacrificed to create a just workplace? Come explore the intersections between food, kashrut, and ethics with Ari Hart, co-director of NYC-based Uri L'Tzedek, the Orthodox social justice movement that led the Agriprocessors boycott.
