Fifa World Cup Final - (7/11/2010)
Because the World Cup final was held in Joburg, many of us couldn't go, so we decided to have an event at the house, where we watched the match, ate lots of food and had a great time!

Music and Life - (7/9/2010)
A few of the housemates and friends got together to talk about the meaning of music in our lives. We focused on the World Cup song, 'Waka Waka' and what it means for Africa, as well as how we all felt about it being performed by someone who is not from Africa.

Theatre Game Night - (7/4/2010)
We got together to play a few film-related games, like charades. We also discussed a few of the latest films and the meaning behind them. We also talked about some of the films shown at the Israeli Film Festival, which was held in Cape Town this month.

The Three Weeks-Bein ha-Metzarim - (6/30/2010)
In order to commemorate the period of mourning (in honour of the two temples), we invited a few people over to discuss the meaning behind this Jewish custom. We spoke about the impact the destruction of the temples has had throughout history and where it fits in with our lives.

We invited people over after Shabbat dinner to chill and have some snacks. We also discussed the parsha of the week and the meaning behind it.

Israel-Diaspora Relations - (6/22/2010)
A group of us got together to discuss the recent Gaza Flotilla Raid. We looked at the reasons behind it, as well as the justifications given by both sides, which brought about a big debate between opposing opinions; and we also looked at the different reactions, worldwide, including that of the leaders of our own community.

The game was here in CT, and not all of us were fortunate to get some tickets, so we arranged a projector and watched the world champion (not anymore) and Paraguay.

It was Yom yerushalim. Kevin came all the way from SF! and we decided to have some fun and enjoy a light different prospective of yom yerushalim, read by Julian. the weather was a bit KAK (in Afrikaans) and from a braai we changed it to a Mexican fiesta! We decided to have something a bit different for our monthly book club. we hosted our friend Gavin, who's about to finish his book.
Gavin's book deals with a mixed race love affair during Apartheid. Hearing Gavin was absolutely amazing.

We decided to establish a new routine of having once a month a weekly Parsha in our house.
This week's parsha was Kedoshim Acharei.
This parsha deals with Laws and customs (Mitzvot). we had a nice discussion of this Laws. how are we as Jews refer to them, in the 21st century.

The Third Seder is a time when we are having our own interpretation of the Pesach Seder. We talked about messages of freedom and the meaning that we can derive from Pesach in the modern day.
The Third Seder was a really successful event and a lot of people came to celebrate with us and to find the specialty of Pesach.

In Memory of the Holocaust - (4/11/2010)
We got a big group of people together to discuss our feelings and views surrounding the Holocaust. We shared personal family stories and others that we found particularly moving. We also spoke about how important it is to remember what happened and honoured all of the victims and survivors.

A group of us decided to learn a little bit about being kosher for Pesach and discussed the concept over the breaking of the chag. Everyone brought different types of chametz to share.

Refugee Relief - (5/23/2008)
If you have been following international news, you may have heard that South Africa has been heavily hit by xenophobic attacks against poor black africans around the country. Moishe House CT has always been proactive in the fight against discrimination, so when friend snd Nobel peace prize nominee Zackie Achmat called us on Friday and told us we needed to make 1000 sandwiches to feed refugees who had fled from there homes around the country, we rose to the occassion. We also made sleepbags for good measure

We decided to have a fun braai (barbecue), swim, and chill day to celebrate the end of the year of working with an outreach organization that we've been quite involved with, helping under-privileged children. It was a really great day and everyone had a good time!

Talk on Education - (4/30/2007)
We managed to get hold of this amazing guest speaker, who came and gave a talk on the current educational crisis South Africa is currently facing. As Jews, knowledge and education have been the backbone of our culture for thousands of years, it's important for us to be invovled and know what is going on in our country, and how we ourselves can help. People stayed behind afterwards as late as 3am talking, debating and socializing. This was an unbeleivablly good event.
