Sukkah Braai - (10/4/2009)
We invited lots of Guests over to the house for a Braai (barbeque) durig Sukkot in order for everyone to have an opportunity to fulfill the mitzvah of eating in the Sukkah.

Occupation and the Israeli Army - (10/2/2009)
Three Israelis were in South Africa who had refused to serve in the IDF as a form of protest against the Occupation. They feel that if they have any involvement in the Army they are carrying on the Occupation.

It was a very good event.

Looking towards Yom Kippur - (9/25/2009)
We held an evening with two parts. One was a personal one where guests wrote down thoughts and regrets of the previous year. People really got into it and made an effort to be as intense as possible.
These were then burnt to signal a new beginning and an opportunity for everyone to move forward.
The next part of the night contained us baking cupcakes. Everyone got involved and baked a cupcake for someone else that was there - which they took home and were meant to break the fast with/on. This sort of symbolizes the connection between everyone in moishe house family as we begin the new year of dreams, food and friends with a bite of a cupcake made from someone else.
Heritage Day - (9/23/2009)
Heritage Day in South Africa is held every year on the 24th of September. It is a public holiday and because it was close to the weekend many people went away for the long weekend.
However, we manged to squeeze in a quick discussion about South Africa's heritage and culture.
Everyone had to bring an idea or object that for them represents South Africa's heritage. Some spoke about Braaiing, one person about the way we have progressed from Apartheid and another spoke about our love for Rugby.

We watched a documentary and the day was enjoyed by all.

Chilled Supper - (8/27/2009)
We chatted to several of the regular house guests and encouraged them to come over to the bayit and to bring a friend.

Anyways, even though not many people came, it was a fun night and we realized the benefit of small intimate suppers.

Israel Update Two - (8/23/2009)
Following the success of the first Israel Update in July we hosted another one.
The aim of the event is to discuss daily happenings in Israel but really under the surface it is for Jewish people to be thinking about Israel when most don't.
The big discussions were about the Swedish claims of Organ Harvesting by the IDF as well as the recent news of a mistake by the IDF which resulted in a Egyptian boder controller being shot.
It was a very interesting event and hopefully we will be able to run many more of these events.

The night was lots of fun and everyone enjoyed the challenges and the competitive fun of the night. Hopefully in the future we will be able to run a proper amazing race in Johannesburg...
Limmud Debriefing and Sharing - (8/11/2009)
The Limmud event was held on the 9th and 10th of August and it was brilliant. It was also great to see so many of our regulars were there.
We decided that because there is so many sessions to chose form on Limmud and its impossible to see/hear everything you want that we were going to invite as many Limmud participants over for a "debriefing" and knowledge sharing activity.
We wanted to know more and learn more and the event was a great success in doing that. People spoke about things they had heard and passed on lots of information.
Equal Education One - (8/2/2009)
We went out to two different shopping malls in Johannesburg to gather signatures for a petition that Equal Education are organizing.

We did really well in the freezing cold- we got 300 signatures between the 8 of us.

We have managed to team up with an organization called Equal Education and we ran an event on Friday to show and tell our guests exactly who they are and what we will be doing with them.

After the discussions everyone chilled and relaxed for a few hours.

Following some thought by the housemates and a few regular guests we have decided to begin bi-monthly Israel Updates.
The goal of the event is to invite 3-5 guests over with each one bringing an article from the internet about happenings going on in Israel.
Our first event was a big success. The food was enjoyed by all and the discussion was thoughtful and intense.
The biggest talking points were; the court case and riots related to a Haredi woman in Jerusalem and a book of testimonies released on the day relating to Israel's actions in Gaza in Operation Cast Lead.
The night was enjoyed by all and hopefully will become a regular Moishe event.

Biscuits and Israel - (5/22/2009)
We were very fortunate to be visited by Howie Gordon at this event. Howie is a family friend of one of the Moishe Regulars and was in town for a couple for weeks. He is an ex-South African and lives in Israel on a Kibbutz and has been doing so for nearly 20 years.
Howie facilitated a discussion for 20 people about Kibbutz and how it has changed over the last 30 years. He spoke about the place he thought he was going to and how different it was to the place he has been living it.
We were also able to ask many questions and understand the role that Kibbutzim play in Israeli society. It was very informative.
He also taught us a couple of Israeli songs which added a bit of fun to the night.
The night ended with the eating of lost of rusks and biscuits with tea and coffee

The breakfast was fun and everyone enjoyed the cooking
