For a few years, our very own Jodi Berris has started a local Portland Maccabi Club. We hope to keep it growing and one day be a part of the int'l Maccabi Games. For now, we recruit Jewish teens to play sports, and Moishe Houseniks volunteer to be the coaches!

"Let the Chess-tivities Begin!" - (7/6/2010)

Jason Cigan, Becca's brother, led us in a chess tutorial and some during-play instruction during this fun night! It was much like a game night with people lounging and catching up and eating the light dinner we served, but people also got a lot of info about chess! It was great!

Torah on Tap: "Shooting up with Torah" - (6/23/2010)

Rabbi Tzvi Fischer of the Portland Kollel led us in a conversation about piercings, tattoos, and drugs from Torah perspectives. It was interesting and I think we were all surprised by at least one thing we heard! It was a lot of material to cover so we'll probably make drugs and alcohol an entirely different topic to discuss sometime.

We had a great turn-out, a great teacher, and a great conversation! Did I mention great food? While munching on pizza, we listened as Rabbi Fischer dispelled some myths about sex in observant Judaism and taught us about the oneness and holistic partnership envisioned in the Torah for sex, intimacy, and marriages within Judaism.

"Torah and Taxes" - (3/15/2010)

Rabbi Tzvi Fischer of the Portland Kollel lead Moishe Houseniks in a conversation about giving out of lovingkindess versus paying taxes due to the law of the nation. It was very interesting to discuss all our opinions of taxes, and ask questions about the ancient Torah and Talmudic law regarding giving to one's community. At the center of the conversation was the "Shekalim" rule: each person gives half a shekel by Torah law to the community and also the progressive "income tax" of one's produce or money. At the heart of the Torah's wisdom is the idea that giving because we want to, as opposed to out of force, keeps the idea of tzedakah and chessed, lovingkindness, very close to our hearts.

Sukkah Building - (9/27/2009)

Help Build the MH Sukkah! .....then, come party in it on October 2nd for 1-800-Shabbat. A sukkah is a structure consisting of a roof made of organic material which has been disconnected from the ground (the s'chach). A sukkah must have at least 2-1/2 walls. It should be at least three feet tall, and be positioned so that all or part of its roof is open to the sky (only the part which is under the sky is kosher.) The halakha requires that all eating of meals and sleeping should be conducted in the sukkah. However, one is not expected to remain in the sukkah if he would be very uncomfortable there[2]. For this reason, Jews living at northern latitudes will generally not sleep in the sukkah due to the cold temperatures of autumn nights. Some Jews in these locales will spend some time in the sukkah eating and relaxing but go indoors to sleep.

Torah on Tap July - (7/21/2009)

Rabbi Motti Wilhelm of Lake Oswego Chabad led a discussion on "What does the Torah have to say about our society?" Although very basic, like all the summer's topics, it was helpful because it encouraged us to talk about how Torah is applicable to us individually. What does it tell us? There were 2 returners from last month's program and 2 attendees new to MH, so we're glad Jewish learning is generating interest!
