Ahavat Hinam- Unconditional Love - (7/8/2010)

We are right in the middle of the three week period of mourning culminating in Tisha b'Av, which commemorates the destruction of two Temples and endless tragedy throughout history. What a downer in the midst of the openness and summer loving we might be feeling. Is there a way to make emotional and spiritual sense of this darkness in the light and heat of the summer? We will sing, meditate, study and discuss this question, especially in the context of love and hate and inner Temples. Marc hasn't lived in London for 10 years, but grew up there. Once an actor and storyteller, he is now a rabbi in Boulder, Colorado in the foothills of the Rockies, where he straddles the worlds of Conservative (Masorti) Judaism and Jewish Renewal.

Urban Bee Keeping Meeting - (6/15/2010)

Bee-keeping is surprisingly easy, immensely fulfilling and has a sweet reward. Join Mark and his growing group at MoHoLo for the second gathering of potential urban beekeepers, ready and willing to host a hive in their own garden or to help care for one in someone's else's. Join us whether you are committed or curious and whether you are an expert or an enthusiastic beginner The aim of this project is to help make the UK Jewish community self-sufficient in honey within 5 years, as well as connecting with the wider urban beekeeping community in London. We need 200 hives to do this. You dont need much space to do it you can even put hives on a roof. Could you or someone you know be interested? Do you know of a Jewish organisation that might be willing to host a hive? As well as being fun, this project has a serious purpose: join us in working towards a more sustainable community and to help promote biodiversity. More information on what were doing will be posted here, and if you want to get involved then please contact us at marknew55(at)yahoo.com

Naomi Chazan - (6/13/2010)

Ha'aretz April 2010 - Moishe House London is thrilled team up with NIF New Gen and invite you to come and meet Naomi Chazan on Sunday 13 June. Naomi, President of New Israel Fund and former Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, will talk about the work of NIF and its recent vilification by Israeli media. Jelly: Coworking at MoHoLo - (5/24/2010)

What is Jelly? Jelly is a casual working event. It's taken place in over a hundred cities where people have come together (in a person's home, a coffee shop, or an office) to work for the day. We provide chairs and sofas, wireless internet, and interesting people to talk to, collaborate with, and bounce ideas off of. You bring a laptop (or whatever you need to get your work done) and a friendly disposition. Show up when you wish, but do let us know that you are planning to come so we can estimate numbers: Come at 7am for 30mins yoga / stretching Come at 7.45am for porridge Come anytime after that for working. Why do you do this? Jelly started in NYC in February of 2006 when roommates Amit and Luke realized that they loved working from home, but they missed the creative brainstorming, sharing, and camaraderie of a traditional office. (Office politics, not so much.) So they started inviting friends to come work from their home one day a week. They soon found that working in close proximity to new and interesting people every couple weeks resulted in new ideas and interesting conversations. Emboldened by their early success, they made it a more regular thing. Jelly was born. And now it's at MoHoLo. Join us!

Three Faiths Forum Training - (5/11/2010)

The Three Faiths Forum Encountering Faiths programme is run in schools all over London. A Christian, Jewish and Muslim presenter speaks to a group of young people talking about their experiences and taking questions about their faith and identity. These sessions have received great feedback from young people and teachers; the presenters find it very rewarding work. Many of these students have never spoken to a Jew, Christian or Muslim before: as a presenter you will be at the fore front of combating prejudice and the broadening the horizons of young people’s understanding. 3FF will be running a training session for potential speakers at the Moishe House in Willesden Green on 11 May from 7:30pm.

Judaism, Buddhism and Spirituality - (4/25/2010)

Venerable Amaranatho was born and brought up in the Jewish faith, and in his late teens had severe doubts about Judaism and left all religion behind him. He went on to work within the computer industry and took a degree in computing and artificial intelligence. He then traveled around the world for four years, where he learnt about meditation and the thought began, to become a monk. He has been a Buddhist monk for ten years and lives at Amaravati Monastery near Hemel Hempstead. He leads residential family, young people and creative retreats for adults at the retreat center at Amaravati (www.family.amaravati.org). These events are based on co-exploration, creativity, fun and a willingness to honestly look at oneself. The main emphasis is on a contemplative or reflective attitude towards understanding who we are. This is based on accepting or welcoming the way life is and allowing our natural wisdom to arise.

Shot by local film director Dani Landau, he is brave enough to film around Sederot during last years operation cast lead we are guided through Israel's rocket zone by an ex-paratroop officer turned peacemaker Nafatli Raz. He shows an insight into the complexities of the region and the inherent paradoxes of Peace and Power Politics in the middle east conflict. This is a not to be missed film, which will be followed by a discussion on the operation that happened, media reaction and whether this film shows a side of the conflict that is not widely appreciated.

Silent Meditation - (3/18/2010)

Most months we offer an opportunity to meditate in a group environment, without an instructor. The evening will consist of two half-hour sittings, with a five-minute break between and a space to share experience afterwards. NB: This group is most suitable for those with some experience of meditation as no instruction will be included during the session, though there will be an opportunity to ask questions before if you arrive early. You should be able to sit in meditation for at least 30 minutes. If you are a beginner to meditation it is advisable for you to practice/attend introductory classes on meditation before coming to this group. Please be on time, as we will start at 7.35pm **** This will be an opportunity to sample the benefits of meditation in a group; experienced meditation teachers say it is most valuable to do so. The group will not be method-specific, so whichever practice you engage in can be used, as long as it is silent. There is already some interest from a few people who practice Zazen and Vipassana Buddhist meditation techniques who would like to join the group. It will also be an opportunity to compare and discuss different techniques, which is not always possible. This event is organised and facilitated by Daniel Gigi.

War and Peace in Jewish Thought - (3/16/2010)

Blood seeps from a good number of Biblical passages, but so too do glorious dreams of peace. When the Jews were kicked out of Ancient Israel arguments about ‘just wars’ and military power became theoretical, but now there is a State, an army and a whole bunch of military complexity involved in being a modern Jew. Join Rabbi Jeremy Gordon, for an evening’s journey through sources and struggles with an ancient issue that has very contemporary edges. Rabbi Jeremy Gordon is the rabbi of New London Synagogue. He has a first class honours degree in law from Cambridge University and received rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. While in New York, Jeremy trained as a hospital Chaplain and spent many hours working with the Red Cross in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. Jeremy teaches midrash, theology and Judaism, society and politics. This is set to be a fascinating examination of relevant and controversial issues by a great teacher-not to be missed!

Mental Health First Aid (3/3) - (3/11/2010)

"The best couple of days of training I have ever done! :) Anybody who works with people in any capacity should do it - it should be the law!” Feedback from a participant of the Mental Health First Aid course. WHAT IS IT? Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a national training programme developed to: - Raise awareness of mental health issues. - Train non-professionals to recognise those affected by mental health problems and offer initial help and guidance towards professional support. WHY IS IT NECESSARY? Did you know that one in four individuals will experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in a year? This course would strengthen the support that you offer to those affected by mental health problems, enabling you to identify and help those affected in your community, workplace, their families and friends. This is a 12-hour course, developed and regulated by the National Institute of Mental Health in England (NIMHE) and England's Care Services Improvement Partnerships (CSIP). Participants will receive a CISP certificate and manual on successful completion of the course. WHO IS IT FOR? The course is for anyone who may come into contact with a person with a mental health problem either in their day to day life and/or workplace. The training will be delivered by Katrin Eichhorn, Senior Community Development Worker (Mental Health) at Voluntary Action Camden and Claire Nacamuli, mental health awareness trainer. We are both approved MHFA Instructors. Supported by Voluntary Action Camden (VAC), 293-299 Kentish Town Road, London NW5 2TJ, www.vac.org.uk

Dance Midrash - (2/22/2010)

Jackie Waltz returns to Moishe House London for a one-off dance midrash class, using movement and text to explore the concept of hands, giving and tzedakah in Judaism. What is dance midrash? Dance midrash is a method of explicating biblical i.e. Torah texts through dance and movement activities. These activities reflect, elaborate or clarify nuances of the verses being considered. While literary midrash is primarily an intellectual activity, dance midrash combines physical experience as well as the creative process to arrive at a deeper understanding of the text. One experiences ideas in a way which might not be possible through verbal analysis alone. Text is approached on several levels: in looking at the words of the text; in warm up exercises focusing on movement; through direct dance improvisation which explore the text; through discussion of how the verse may relate to contemporary or personal issues, and finally through a concluding dance activity which challenges the dancer’s physical, emotional and intellectual capacities. The process may be described as “exegesis”, i.e. drawing from the text to derive the movement, or “isegesis”, performing the movement and reading back onto the text. We will ask for a small financial donation to fund the class.

House of Learning - (2/15/2010)

House of Learning, in association with Jeneration The Moishe House Beit Midrash run in association with Jeneration Serious, egalitarian, post-denominational learning in a informal and relaxed setting. In the first half, choose between: The Talmud Group We are studying chapter 9 of Masechet (Tractate), Bava Kamma. This is quite challenging, but is great fun and is good for Talmud skills. If you have a copy of Bava Kamma, by all means bring it, if not we'll have photocopies. All welcome, but we study the text in the original (slowly!) so best if you have a least a little background in hebrew. We are guided by Raphael Sylvester, who cut his teeth studying Talmud for 2 years at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem. or Aviad Hadar's amazing Hebrew Group! "It is the language of the prophets of the signs on the wall it is old it is sacred it will open up your soul! (Language of the Hebrew Man/ Ehud Banay)" The long awaited Moholo Hebrew class is finally here, yes we know you were secretly and furtively waiting . Whether you want to try and haggle with a rude taxi driver in your next visit to Israel, open a start up in Tel Aviv or just give a chance to Israeli singers this is the right class for you. So what is planned? good question ! I have a few ideas but we can always change it according to what we decide later on. So, for starters we are going to work on small- talk skills with a little bit of slang in the first part of the class. Then we are going to watch a short part of a classic Israeli comedy (satire) called "Hachamishiya Hakamerit" and try to translate it , hoping that Israeli humor can be understood in English. Finally,we will chill down with a glass of good Arak ( GG supermarkets permitting) and Bery Sacharuf song which we will also translate and discuss . All levels from basic Shalom to complicated lehitraut are welcome as we will simply pair people up with others at similar level of fluency. Food, beers and alternative suggestions are welcome! Aviad is an Israeli, a Neuroscientist, and new (ish) resident of Moishe House London! Guest speaker for the second half will be Annette Böckler speaking on: 1810-2010: 200 years of modern Jewish liturgy. Dr Annette M. Boeckler is librarian of the Leo Baeck College and lecturer for Bible & Jewish Liturgy. Her scientific areas are Jewish Liturgy and the Bible and her studies cover themes such as Bible literature, interpretation-history of the Bible, the development and structure of the Jewish Liturgy, and Theology of the Prayer book. Before she joined the Leo Baeck College she was a member of the teaching staff at the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien at Heidelberg. She was instrumental in establishing the library of Abraham Geiger College in Potsdam and has been actively involved in Progressive Judaism in Germany. She has translated the liturgy of the British Reform Movement into German which is now the standard liturgy of the German Reform Movement.

Tu B'Shevat Seder - (1/31/2010)

The third annual Moishe House Tu B'Shevat Seder! PLEASE BRING: some fruit and some white or red wine (marked veggie / kosher if possible) for use in the Seder. Juice will be provided for those who prefer it! The Tu B'Shevat Seder was developed by scholars of Mystical Judaism and is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the natural world with which we are inextricably connected. The ceremony will be interactive, so it will be possible for all guests to find a connection of their own within the experience, regardless of spiritual or religious affiliation. R. Yochanan said: One day [Honi the Circle-maker] was journeying on the road and he saw a man planting a carob tree. He asked him: How long does it take for this tree to bear fruit? The man replied: Seventy years. He then further asked him: Are you sure you will live another seventy years? The man replied: I found [full-grown] carob trees in the world. Hang Out at the House - (1/27/2010)

Moishe House London, together with the JCC, hosts a monthly evening of socialising with our Darfuri neighbours, as there is no specific community centre for them to meet up at. And anyway, it's always nice to hang out with friends and neighbours, eh? This is purely a social event for people to relax, snack, get to know each other, share a joke and occasionally assist more recent arrivals with CV writing and English conversation.

Wassailing in Willesden Green - (1/17/2010)

Be a part of the first (well...in recent history!), incredible London wassailing! Moishe House London and the Brent Apple Pickers will be wandering from Chatsworth Road and through Willesden Green High Street. WHAT IS WASSAILING? If you are from the MoHoLo community, well, Wassailing is the ancient English equivalent of Tu b'Shevat. Wassail means 'good health' in old, old English. Help us to bless the local trees, and then join us walking, singing and listening to extraordinary entertainment as we stop every so often along our route, to hear our neighbours and friends read poetry, tell stories and sing songs on the subject of trees and of the hope of a good harvest in 2010 from the depths of January! Then, join us back at MoHoLo for cups of hot chocolate and Wassail (mulled wine but better!) WHO ARE BRENT APPLE PICKERS? A lot of the apples, pears and plums that grow in local back gardens end up rotting on the ground. To reduce food waste, a new project that started in September 2009 has picked nearly a ton of fruit, to be given away free to local schools and sold to local restaurants. Overall, 40 volunteers and 15 garden-owners have contributed to 850 kg of fruit being saved, at the same time getting to know near-neighbours with common values and interests. The project is part of Transition Town Kensal to Kilburn in partnership with Brent Friends of the Earth. Plans for next year include pruning and pest management. For more details contact Michael.Stuart6@gmail.com WHAT IS MOISHE HOUSE LONDON? Moishe House London, in Willesden Green, was founded in October 2007. As a Moishe House it is part of a worldwide network of houses that double up as centres of grassroots Jewish community. From our own home, we bring exciting, creative, non-denominational Jewish community to London, also welcoming and supporting our local community. From Friday night dinners to film showings, impromptu concerts to study sessions, meditation to jam sessions to social action events - the possibilities are endless.

BARAKA SCREENING - (9/13/2009)

We had this showing in June and had many people ask to have the opportunity to see it as they missed out. Baraka is an incredible nonverbal film containing images of 24 countries from 6 continents, created by Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson, with music from Michael Stearns and others. The film has no plot, contains no actors and has no script. Instead, high quality 70mm images show some of the best, and worse, parts of nature and human life. Timelapse is used heavily to show everyday life from a different perspective. Baraka is often considered a spiritual film.

Beit Midrash - (7/6/2009)

Welcome to the 2nd session of our Summer Term. This week the guest teacher is Moshe Lavee of Haifa University who will looking at: An Indigestible Heritage? : Reflections on Matzos, Dead Fathers and Old Mothers In this session we will discuss contemporary Jewish creativity in light of some old weird Talmudic stories. The stories, telling about sages wondering from and towards their half-dead parents will be read and discussed in light of the renewal of Jewish culture in the current generation in the states and the UK. We would consider the relations of past and present, as well as that of Israeli and non-Israeli modes of contemporary Jewish identity, and the various routes and paths between them. Can the Talmudic narratives serve as an archetype for our concerns? Dr Moshe Lavee is a lecturer in Talmud and Midrash in the University of Haifa. Alongside to his academic teaching and studies he was involved in Jewish Education, bringing together texts and people from diverse orientations. Moshe was a Lecturer in Leo Baeck College and taught in various communities and events in the UK, including including Limmud, NNLS and LSJS. This month we are excited to present the following regular sessions during the first hour:- Stewart Brookes on Jonah, Elijah, and Samson: Three Death Wishes and a Funeral. Three sessions. Three well-known biblical figures. Three new readings. Stewart Brookes has a PhD in medieval literature and is currently teaching at University College London. His research interests include biblical adaptation, midrash, and Hebrew manuscript art. Ellen Goldberg on Democracy, Refugees and Pollution: Issues in Modern Israel Ellen Goldberg has worked for New Israel Fund for 8 years, 6 of which in Israel, and as Executive Director in the UK since 2007. She has 20 years’ experience developing social and health services in Israel, especially for Israel’s immigrants, elderly and children at risk. Prior to that Ellen worked in the US with migrant farm workers and in the planning and evaluation of America’s social welfare programmes. and Eiran Davies on Talmud Bavli: Masechet Megillah We are contiuing our fabulous study of tractate megillah, with the great rabbinic Jeweller Eiran Davies. Working through the text in the original, with the help of dictionaries, we always seek to find the deeper ideas behind the legal arguments, studying the aggadah as well as the halachah, and focusing on the theme of the sanctity of text. You need not be a talmudic scholar though some knowledge of hebrew/experience of text study is helpful. Coming soon we have: 20 July Adam Kraus on Our Moral Compass The Torah tells us that – under certain circumstances – we should stone our disobedient children. Are we the only ones who sometimes find the Torah difficult to swallow? Does our own gut reaction mean anything at all? The Rabbis, in their varied responses to this text, show us that our moral compass has a part to play. An interactive text-based session for all. Adam Kraus read Hebrew Studies at Oxford University and is an alumnus of Hebrew University and Yeshivat Haetzion (Gush). He has taught across the community; a regular Moishe House visitor, Adam is an exciting, engaging teacher of texts. Shavua tov to you all and hope to see you at an event soon! BDJJLR *** Stewart Brookes will be looking at:- 6 July: "Prophet and Loss: Elijah and the Rhetoric of Gesture" When we set a place for Elijah at the Seder table, or invoke him in the context of the merry little jingle "Eliahu HaNavi" at Havdalah, Elijah presents a figure of comfort and consolation. His story in the Book of Kings is a much darker one than this, however: a story of loss, trauma, and pained personal responsibility. In this session we will examine that narrative, in search of insight into this complex biblical figure. 20 July: "Samson and the Temple of Doom" Is there more to Samson than his hair? Is this a story of hope or despair? And what do the musical notes in the Tanakh have to tell us about the narrative? Drawing on midrash, Josephus, David Grossman, and the rippling muscles of Victor Mature, we will ask "Why? Why? Why? Delilah?". *** Ellen Goldman's sessions will be on:- 6 July:- The Future of Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Foreign Workers in Israel – Will Jewish or humanistic values lose out to xenophobia? Is it really a win-lose situation? 20 July:- How Does the ‘Chosen People’ Pollute Its Promised Land? The struggles and achievements of Israel’s environmental movement - preserving natural resources for the future and safeguarding the health of all Israelis. Come to one or come to them all. Become a player in Jewish tradition. *** Jeneration works in two ways: We provide intense, challenging opportunities to get together, learn, pray and travel. We showed the film Baraka using a projector and big screen. This film is an inspirational journey through earth and it's people, with amazing music and soundscapes. It was the sunniest day and a beautiful evening, as you are probably aware, we don't have reliable weather here. So even though we had 12 people who said they were definitely coming and 59 maybes, the total who showed was 3! I think we need to do more film nights as it will work really well in the space, but have decided we will do more in the winter!

Beit Midrash House of Learning - (5/18/2009)

Our Spring season continutes! Half the evening is taken up with small, facilitated study groups, the subjects of which change every 8 weeks. The second half is a session led by guest teachers, who hail from all corners of the Jewish Community. First Half sessions * Talmud led by Eiran Davies. We are contiuing our fabulous study of tractate megillah, with the great rabbinic Jeweller Eiran Davies. * Jules Goldberg: Footsteps in Eternity: Grappling with Time and Transformation. Continuing his exploration of naturalistic philosophy and ethics, inspired by the visions of Spinoza, Einstein, Sagan and others, Jules will be exploring our ever-expanding understanding of the natural world, and asking what it means for us, and for the future of religion. Topics will include: 'Billions and Billions: Evolution, the cosmos, and everything' and 'A Call for a Cosmic Religion: Can Einstein's vision of 'a cosmic religion of the future' be fulfilled? * Food, Kashrut, and the Omnivore's Dilemna led by Zahavit Shalev. Michael Pollan begins The Omnivore’s Dilemma, with the question “What should we have for dinner?” His book is a long and involved answer to this seemingly simple question. We Jews have a comprehensive set of laws determining what we may consume, so it should be easy for us to answer this question, and yet we’re also part of the vast global industrial food chain Pollan describes which makes tracing the food on our plates incredibly complex. Join us in figuring out what we are eating and ascertaining whether it is actually fit to eat. And in the second half... 'Duties of the Heart' we welcome Rabbi Dr Michael Shire, Vice-Principal and Director of the Department of Jewish Education at Leo Baeck College, London. Born in the UK, he studied extensively in the U.S. with Jewish professional posts in New York and California. He has published widely in the field of spiritual education and authored four books on creative liturgy upon which he lectures and teaches in academic and communal settings

Cannabis Chassidis - (5/12/2009)

Moishe House London presents: Yoseph Leib, author of Cannabis Chassidis and THE *rebbe* on the subject. Followed by a Lag B'Omer bonfire in our garden. ----------------- “Seven years ago, I came to Jerusalem, just out of high school, looking for an authentic Jewish tradition for how to smoke marijuana rightly, helpfully, more effectively and more meaningfully. What I found additionally and instead was a living culture, wrestling with the mystery of how to incorporate the ecstatic; and the mystery of the causes for it's repression, along with a lot of brilliant guidance and terrible truths about the nature of religion, law, idealism and drugs.” Cannabis Chassidis ran as a weblog from January 2005 to May 2007, detailing the question and it's exploration: How could it be that something as inherent to modern life as Marijuana, something with a rich history of human usage, has no tradition in Torah, a guidance system that I was raised to understand as encompassing everything good that one should know? There are answers for what IS there in the tradition, rich allusions to herbs and smokes used in different capacities, and the more interesting answers and questions are about what there isn't in the tradition, and why. And along the way, the spectrum of an experience of Judaism's living mystical subculture is explored, and the romantic idealization and redemptive potential of both Psychedelia and Judaism are touched and felt deeply, in the context of outstanding communities and individuals who have experienced the glories and the failures of both. Yoseph Leib has been living in Jerusalem, letting the big questions introduce him to all kinds of fascinating people and perspectives. And soon, he's coming to Great Britain, B"H, in the hopes of Connecting. ----------------- 7pm - Yoseph Leib 9pm - Garden Party and Lag B'Omer Bonfire

Towards a Jewish Theology - (3/11/2009)

Marc Ellis; the top name in Jewish Liberation Theology, comes to Moishe House! This is his only Jewish event in London. Is there a Jewish theology of liberation and if so what does it look like? In a meaningful way, the people Israel begins with liberation; as Jews we are commanded to reenact this yearly. At the same time, Jews explore the needs of the time in which we live: What do we need to be liberated from? Where would our liberation lead us? The obvious issues to discuss are the Holocaust, Israel and the Palestinians, all of which lead to question of Jewish identity today. What does it mean to be Jewish in our time? Liberation Theology is a movement in Christianity, particularly Catholicism, that began in the late 1950s, that looked at religion from the perspective of the poor. Fusing Christian doctrine with socialism, and Marxism. As grassroots led movement, with strong roots in South America it placed at the heart of Christianity political activism, especially about social justice, poverty, and human rights. Its theologians consider sin the root source of poverty, recognizing sin as exploitive capitalism and class war by the rich against the poor. Marc Ellis began as a holocaust theologian in the tradition of Richard Rubenstein and Emil Fackenheim, discussing what theological implictions to dram from the shoah. He later became interested in Liberation Theology, and began to apply its teaching to Judaism, particularly in relation to Israel/Palestine. He called for a 'return to the prophetic' in advocating a Palestinian state, at a time, in the 1970s, when it was hugely controversial to do so. His understanding of liberation theology has caused him to critique 'constantine Judaism' ie religion in defence of state power, and calls for a return to jewish values of justice. Famously, and controversially, he once commented "Because of our abuse of power, should the Torah reside somewhere else, at least for the time being? When the Ark is opened, instead of the Torah, perhaps we should find placed there a helicopter gunship. The congregation will revere it. We will admire its power. And bow before it." Marc Ellis is University Professor of Jewish Studies and Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He is the author and editor of more than twenty books including Toward a Jewish Theology of Liberation and this year, Judaism Does Not Equal Israel. His work is a meditation on what can be learned and retained from his encounters with the Catholic Worker movement, post-Holocaust theology, Latin America Liberation Theology, engagement with the Palestinian cause, and acknowledgment of Israeli violence.

Unfortunately, for him he is tracked down by a Lebanese terrorist, the Phantom (John Turturro). We will explore the representation of Jews on recent film. Where does this film fall in terms of the 'queer' Diaspora Jew or the 'tough' Zionist? What can this film tell us about American Jewish self-perceptions today? Is this a sign of confidence or crisis? And is the Middle East a valid subject for comedy? Dr. Nathan Abrams is a Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at Bangor University and Director of the Centre for Film Studies. He is author and editor six books, including Studying Film (2001). He also teaches a course entitled 'Midrash and the Movies' at the London School of Jewish Studies.

Hang Out at the House - (2/25/2009)

Moishe House London, together with the JCC, hosts a monthly evening of socialising between Londoners and asylum seekers, refugees and new citizens from Darfur. Imagine coming to a country and having a social life that involves lawyers, council representatives and people on the tube. Depressing isn't it? Many of our Jewish ancestors were fortunate to have a community here waiting for them when they arrived in the UK. Under the current system, and with fewer established cultural groups, it is often harder for refugees and asylum seekers to find friends and with them all of the happy interactions we all appreciate. You won’t be asked to write any letters or sign any petitions - this is purely a social event for people to relax and get to know each other. Donations would be welcome to help cover the travel costs of the Darfuri visitors.

Jewish Superstition - (2/17/2009)

A talk by folklorist Del Reid. From the Exodus through to the shtetls of Europe and into the urban world of today there are superstitions we have created ourselves and superstitions we have collected along the way. From the Ayin Ha Horrar, and the Blud Shtruff, the Kamayah and spitting three times; there are evils in the world that superstition and its surrounding rituals protect us from... or so we would believe. The talk will last apx 45mins with space for questions and discussion at the end. If you know of a Jewish superstition you would like explained Del will help you to understand it. Raised in the East End, Del Reid is a Folklorist, lecturing and advising on the superstition, music, symbolism, folktales and culture of Eastern European Jewry. He has a great fascination for revelation through research, and has also worked as a poet, storyteller and archivist. Del was the chairman of the UK Society for Storytelling from 2000-2006 and is now co-ordinator of National Storytelling Week, which occurs over the last week of January and the first week of February.

An Introduction to Spinoza - (2/11/2009)

Baruch Spinoza is one of the most important and interesting thinkers to have emerged from the Jewish people. Born into the Amsterdam Jewish community in 1632, a community formed in the wake of the Spanish Inquisition, Spinoza received an intensive Jewish education from a young age. However, he rebelled against the ideas he was taught, and at the age of 23 was excommunicated from the community in the harshest possible terms. Spending his adult years working as a lens grinder, Spinoza went on to become one of the greatest and most influential philosophers of the Western tradition, laying the foundations for The Enlightenment, and deeply inspiring minds as great as Albert Einstein. It has been said that “all philosophy after him is permeated with his thought”. Spinoza championed reason, and rallied against superstition. His book, The Ethics, presented a grand rational system that attempted to explain everything from the nature of reality to human psychology. Central to his philosophy is that idea that all things are modes or attributes of a single substance, which he termed “G-d or Nature”. Despite being one of history’s most famous Jewish heretics and Bible critics, in some ways Spinoza is also a quintessentially Jewish thinker. He formed a universalist, religious world-view, with a bold conception of “God” at its core, with its own means of understanding and dealing with the sufferings of the Jewish past. Come to this session for an introduction to Spinoza’s life and ideas. The session will be led by house regular Jules Goldberg Some quotes about Spinoza: “The noblest and most lovable of the great philosophers.” Betrand Russell "The rebel Jew who gave us modernity" Rebecca Goldstein "A g-d-intoxicated man” Novalis “Spinoza is the Christ of philosophers, and the greatest philosophers are hardly more than apostles who distance themselves from or draw near to this mystery.” Gilles Deluze "How much do I love that noble man More than I could tell with words I fear though he'll remain alone With a holy halo of his own." Albert Einstein

Tu Bishvat Seder - (2/8/2009)

The perfect companion to our afternoon's event! PLEASE BRING: some fruit and some white or red wine (marked veggie / kosher if possible) for use in the Seder. Juice will be provided for those who prefer it! Help us turn the room around from chaos to calm, and from swapshop to ceremony. The Tu B'Shevat Seder was developed by scholars of Mystical Judaism and is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the natural world with which we are inextricably connected. The ceremony will be interactive and so it will be possible for all guests to find a connection of their own within the experience, regardless of spiritual or religious affilliation. As my ancestors planted them for me, so I will plant them for my children. —Babylonian Talmud, Taanit 23a

Adam Kraus: 'What Is Oral Torah?' - (1/22/2009)

Adam returns to MoHoLo, following his successful, thoughtprovoking and entertaining visit to us in 2008. "One of the most important tenets of Judaism is that, alongside the written Torah, there also exists an ‘Oral Torah’ - but what is it? Contrary to popular opinion, the Rabbis of the Talmud offer us a surprising variety of answers, with crucial consequences for the Judaism of today." There will be plenty of time for questions and interaction. Adam Kraus read Hebrew Studies at Oxford University. He is an alumnus of Yeshivat Har Etzion (Gush) and the Hebrew University and has taught across the community. He aims to make Jewish learning relevant, useful and accessible to all.

Gaza: Listening to Each Other - (1/20/2009)

Emotions on the situation in Gaza are running high. There is pressure to have an opinion, to take a stance, to campaign... Away from all that, this event is a space to speak and be heard, to listen and be listened to, without fear of condemnation or escalation. We will use a technique known as 'deep listening' to give each participant their own time to express their feelings & thoughts on the conflict in Gaza. This is not a forum for political debate or contesting 'who is right'. PLEASE DO NOT COME WITH THE INTENTION OF CHANGING OTHERS' VIEWS. It is an opportunity to further your understanding of other perspectives, while adding your own in a space big enough to hold everyone's opinions.
