Moishe House Farewell (Storytelling) Party - (12/26/2009)
Current Moishe House residents and past regulars combined forces to tell stories of MH Seattle's funny and memorable moments. We told them by candlelight, and we ate chocolate-covered cranberries, brie, apples, chips, and salsa. We also schmoozed.

Chanukkah Party - (12/12/2009)
We had a rockin' Chanukkah party, with lots of latkes, donuts and music! We had a coloring/decorating/snowflake making station for our inner child, played an awesomely goofy game of White Elephant, and then danced our little hearts out to the sounds of sambaklez by Sasson!

Moishe House Goes Ice Skating and Carousel Riding at Seattle Cener - (12/6/2009)
The Holidays are coming, and we Jews should also enjoy them!
Join us for our annual venture down to Seattle Center, which will be dressed up in pretty lights and good cheer, where we'll enjoy all it has to offer during the season. That means ice skating, riding the carousel and delicious hot chocolate! They'll even play a special Hanukkah song or two just for us, you'll see.

Poker Night - (11/28/2009)
We had a small but very fun time learning and playing Texas Hold'em Poker. This event brought out a different crowd than usual, which was nice to see, and the card sharks taught the newbies the ins and outs of the game. Also, wine flowed freely leading to much goof and frivolity.

Challah Baking and Cooking Workshop - (11/22/2009)
Masha and Zara rolled up their sleeves and put on their aprons for this long-overdue class! We had a lot of fun teaching people how to make challah dough, then rising it, braiding and baking it. While the challah was rising, we made hummus, tzatziki dip and Mexican Tortilla Soup. Then we got creative with challah toppings, from pesto to cinnamon-raising. We couldn't wait for the challah to come out of the over! The evening ended with carb-coma, as expected, but everyone seemed to leave happy, including the hosts. :)

Moishe House ends up at Gameworks after initially hoping to minigolf - (10/29/2009)
We originally hoped to minigolf, but thanks to the weather we changed the event to a bowling night. When we got to the bowling alley, however, we realized there'd be a 90-minute wait for a lane. We came up with a decent plan C on the spot: a night at Gameworks, the downtown arcade (whose main attractions include Dance Dance Revolution and a bunch of racing games), followed by a snack (and non-reimbursable drinks) at a Capitol Hill bar. It was actually more fun than minigolf OR bowling probably would have been.

Moishe House watches Presepolis and Talks About it Afterwards - (10/21/2009)
Come watch this amazing film, adapted from the graphic novel of the same name, on the big screen projector over at House Bet. We will provide comfy seating, popcorn, and a thoughtful, rousing post-movie discussion.
"PERSEPOLIS presents a deeply personal coming-of-age tale about finding one's place in the world. Based on her bestselling graphic novel, Marjane Satrapi teamed up with underground comic book artist Vincent Paronnaud to co-direct this animated big screen adaptation. The result is an electrifying, heartfelt, and original portrait of a spunky girl who surmounts countless obstacles to grow into a wise young adult. Marjane (voiced by Chiara Mastroianni) is an innocent nine-year-old living in Iran, surrounded by a loving but incredibly protective mother (Catherine Deneuve) and father (Simon Abkarian). She finds comfort in the carefree spirit of her loving grandmother (Danielle Darrieux), as well as music by artists as diverse as ABBA and Iron Maiden. When Marjane's uncle is killed in the Iran/Iraq war, her parents send her to school in Austria, where she can study in safety. The only trouble is that her Middle Eastern appearance frightens people, giving her a harsh lesson in racial prejudice. Somehow, Marjane's fiery spirit doesn't succumb to any of the negativity. Eventually, she returns home to Iran to be closer with her family. But even though she settles into married life, the tyrannical pressures of Iranian society force her to abandon her country once again, sending her to France on another journey. Satrapi and Paronnaud retain the stark, spare animated style of the graphic novels that inspired the film. This is a wise decision: the less specific they get in their visual presentation, the more universal their story becomes. PERSEPOLIS gives viewers several movies in one. It is equal parts coming-of-age story, history lesson, and an animated adventure tale." --Rotten Tomatoes

PROM! - (10/17/2009)
Dress to regress at PROM!!!! Now, way better than High School Prom. We're keeping the streamers, balloons, and classy/cheesy dress code, and ditching the nerves, pretension, and bad music. So get ready to dance the night away-- in the words of Movin' 92.5, "We're not going for art, here. We're just trying to make you feeeeeel GOOD.

Cookie Sukkah - (10/8/2009)
New members event! We encouraged those who've never been ehre, or have only been here once to come out and do something silly with us, and it worked! The informal atmosphere and the sickening deliciousness of graham crackers and frosting is a magical combination for a fun time.

Sukkah Building - (9/27/2009)
A determined group of Moisheniks, largely newcomers, tackled the task of building our sukkah. We opted for some store-bought wood (as opposed to scavenging the nearby ravine), armed ourselves with a powerdrill and some screws, and the results were very sturdy! Zara collected herbs and pumpkins to decorate the sukkah with, and Tamar made the walls out of old sheets. Throw in some Hanukkah lights, and it's a beauty!

Bike Ride (aka Jews on Bikes) - (9/13/2009)
We got together on a beautiful Sunday morning and biked all across Seattle on the Burke-Gilman bike trail to the Puget Sound. We stopped at a roadside cafe in Fremont for some beer and coffee, and discovered that they display many soviet WWII posters. This greatly appealed to the Russian demographic, which made up about 1/2 of the attendees. We even hit a garage sale on the way and finally enjoyed lunch on the beach. We could not have been blessed with better weather for this trip, and everyone had a great time.

Live Jazz at Lucid Lounge - (9/3/2009)
Since August's Lucid event was such a success, we decided to repeat it. Though we didn't have as many attendees at the same time as we did last time, there was a fun "revolving door" feel to the evening, as some people stayed for a while and left and were almost magically replaced by others who were just arriving. We enjoyed the highly improvised instrumental and jazz vocals -- the band's keyboardist, bassist, and drummer were joined by guest vocalists, a flautist, and a sax player while we were there -- and snacked on a lovely four-cheese pizza. A really nice, mellow time was had by all.

Lullaby Moon: A MH Seattle Field Trip - (8/20/2009)
We went downtown in several cars to see Seattle's unique theatrical spectacle dedicated to the world of dreams. There were several characters such as owls, horses, clocks, cats and carriages and musicians. The characters played and danced with the crowd, lead us to different locations in downtown, and ultimately put on a show on the Harbor Steps. Some of us thought it was magical, while others found it a bit too crazy. Go figure!

Karaoke! - (8/16/2009)
When you need to sing, you need to sing! For this very special Moishe House event, we will be rented our very own private room at Venus Karaoke in the Chinatown and screamed our little hearts out! Because Mariah Carey's 'Heartbreaker' was waiting for us, in the sticky binder, under "C."
Live Jazz at Lucid Lounge - (8/13/2009)
We tried to go to Laser Beatles, but again, it was sold out. Last-minute plan B was to go to our favorite local jazz Lucid. There was a great band playing, and there was a jam open to all community musicians in the later part of the evening. Our very own Sergey Feldman played the congas with the band, and it was awesome! Great drinks and a chill time were had by all.

Storytelling Event - (7/25/2009)
At this Moishe House event, all of us got together and told stories. I told the story of how I ended up bungee jumping off the tallest bridge in the world, Dane told a story about a long bus ride she once took, and Sergey told us all about the time he hitch-hiked across the U.S.

"$9.99" - (7/23/2009)
A bunch of us went to the Varsity to check out the well-reviewed Etgar Keret adaptation, and it provoked varied responses. Some of us were very fond of the movie's quirks and sweetness, and some of us wanted to crawl out of our skins. In any case, it was a fulfilling cultural experience and prompted plenty of spirited conversation.

Moishe House Seattle sees - (7/13/2009)
A ragtag band of Moisheniks journeyed to the Guild 45th theater to witness the absurd and uproarious spectacle of (Jewish) comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's newest exercise in guerrilla humor. We laughed, we laughed harder, and some of us ate colorful candy. Afterwards, we had Thai food for dinner.

Moishe House Bowls! - (6/23/2009)

Moishe House Bowls! - (5/20/2009)
Masha bowled extremely well. We're not sure if that's due to her recent visit to a Russian practitioner of voodoo-like body arts, but hey. Breaking 120 is breaking 120. The rest of us did respectably, but Masha was the star of this show. We also got a few new people into the mix, including a very nice young lady named Olivia and a stalwart gentleman called Vadim.

Shesh de Mayo Party - (5/6/2009)
So it was close to Cinco de Mayo, and Summer was in town, so we decided to throw a Mexican-themed Moishe HOuse planning party! Guacamole and conversation flowed freely, and Summer chopped up the pico de gallo herself. There were spontaneous acts of drumming and clownry, and we actually got some great ideas for future events from our guests! We're looking forward to using this feedback in the future, especially when new MOisheniks Nicole and Steven (also present) get on board.

Moishe House Bowls! - (4/22/2009)
Our monthly bowling night drew a smaller crowd than usual, but the weather has been getting awfully nice late, so can you blame them? We had fun rolling balls, 'that's what she said' jokes, and grooving to the cheesy dance tunes at the alley. Looking forward to more next month!

African Music Night - (4/5/2009)
We ventured out to Hidmo's rataurant where there was live music and dancing that night! It's a great place, which It hink literally means "the hole..." And it feels homey that way. We stuffed ourselves on wonderfully spicy Eretrean food and injera. And look mom, no forks! The performers encouraged us to get dance with them, and tried our best "African" moves, most notably of all, "the sprinkler dance." There were 4 newcomers, which was great to see, but unfortunately 3 of them got away before we busted out the camera.

Sushi Brunch - (3/29/2009)

Moishe House Bowls! - (3/24/2009)
Our bowling nights are surely and steadily picking up in popularity. We had a great time grooving to the old school hits at the alley, and the Kahlua coffee didn't hurt either! A couple of newcomers and some old friends we haven't seen in a while (Azura!) just hit the spot.

Moishe House Bowls! - (2/20/2009)
We ventured all the way to West Seattle for the last honest real bowling alley left in the city. We had a great time rolling strikes and gutterballs, and boogying to the music. It wasn't disco bowling night, but you couldn't tell. A great mid-week field trip!
