Birkat Ha-Chammah - (4/8/2009)
Birkat Ha-chammah is a blessing said only once every twenty-eight years at sunrise, at a time when the sun is traditionally believed to complete a cycle started on the fourth day of creation. We're getting up early to learn about the blessing and to greet the sun from a beautiful nearby spot -- the front steps of the Lincoln Memorial in downtown DC! We will recite the blessing just as the sun peeks around the Washington Monument and lights up the full two-mile length of the National Mall from the Capitol dome to the feet of the "Great Emancipator" himself.

JUFJ Fair Purple Line Meeting - (4/2/2009)
MHSS once again joins with Jews United For Justice's "Fair Purple Line" campaign.
The expected construction of the new "Purple Line" light rail link through Montgomery & P.G. Counties will bring opportunities to many, but possibly displace poorer communities and small businesses along its route. Work with JUFJ to get new legislation in suburban Maryland which will protect the vulnerable and guide smarter, more equitable development along the Purple Line. Hear reports from JUFJ members who have done research into our questions. Consider ways in which JUFJ can bring a uniquely local, Jewish voice to this issue. All are welcome, including folks new to the campaign.

This 4-week course will unpack Exodus and Revolution through intensive learning in chevrutah (in pairs) and through facilitated discussions. The primary instructor for the course is Rabbi Erica Asch, AJWS alumna and community organizer with the Washington Interfaith Network. Register here http://action.ajws.org/site/R?i=-C_UYvnmNbP1tOd6PReVfA . See the full flyer here http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dkbw49z_35sv68fd7 . Hamantashen baking w/Tikkun Leil Shabbat - (3/8/2009)
We got in the mood for Purim by getting around the baking sheets with community members and folks from our favorite semi-weekly pluralistic songful social-justice-oriented Shabbat evening minyan, Tikkun Leil Shabbat. There was much rolling-cutting-folding-scooping-baking comraderie. Most of the hamantashen were set aside to accompany TLS's first-ever Purim evening service on monday March 9th at the Josephine Butler Parks Center, but we did nosh on a few as they came out of the oven.

Ethics & Kashrut with Moishe House DC - (3/8/2009)
What is ethical Kashrut? Does Kashrut extend to the treatment of workers who process, prepare and deliver our food? Come explore the intersections between food, kashrut, and ethics with Ari Hart, co-director of NYC-based Uri L'Tzedek, the Orthodox social justice movement that led the Agriprocessors boycott http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/06/opinion/06herzfeld.html . Uri L'Tzedek is currently launching a groundbreaking grassroots initiative, the Tav HaYosher, to bring workers, restaurant owners, and community members together to create just workplaces in kosher restaurants.
