Swap for Good - (4/11/2010)

Like the usual swap bonanza, but even more people benefit! This April will be Swap for Good month - where people across the country will invite their friends over for a clothing swap, and ask for donations from their friends at the door to raise money for local domestic violence shelters. Each host will be able to pick the local shelter that her houseparty will raise money for - so it's a great way to help the shelters on the ground that are desperately in need of assistance. Many people aren't aware of the funding shortage that domestic violence shelters are facing during this recession, so this project will help raise awareness as well as money.

Tuning up for the Spring--Bike Workshop - (4/12/2009)

Getting excited that the weather is warming up? That you can breathe some fresh(er) air and get back on your bike for commuting or recreational riding? Then come to the workshops "Tuning Up For the Spring." The objectives of these workshops are to help you learn how your bike works, how to tune-up your bike for the riding reason, and to support a community of bike riders and advocates. In the first workshop, we'll discuss options for commuting and recreational riding, go over how bikes work, what a tune-up is and what you'll need in order to do it. In the second workshop, we'll walk through a tune-up and then you'll get personal support during an open bike tune-up clinic. And we'll talk shop and eat dinner, too (potluck style, BYOB). The workshops are independent and you can come to the first, the second, or both however works best for you (none is not an option). We will be providing pumps and tools, and ask you to bring replacement parts for your tune-up as well as any bike tools you can share with others in the workshop. You can RSVP for "Tuning Up For the Spring Workshops" to Aaron.Desatnik@gmail.com. Learn more about the workshop below. Feel free to call (preferred) or email me with questions about the workshops or bike mechanic questions. When: Sunday, April 12, 2:30-6pm Where: Kavod House, 165 Winthrop Rd., Apt. Prayer Vigil for Immigration Reform - (2/19/2009)

We prayed for the protection of immigrants and the empowerment of faith communities, and we demanded moral courage from Congress. This vigil was part of a national interfaith effort to organize prayer vigils coinciding with the first recess of this session of Congress, February 13-22, when members will be home in their districts. The vigils gave people of faith an opportunity to reflect on the spiritual roots of their work for immigrants; highlight the moral aspects of the immigration situation; and repent of our nation’s failed and sinful policies and their effects on immigrant workers and their families. Speakers included Margie Klein of Moishe/Kavod House; Bishop Filipe Teixeira, executive director, Immigration Pastoral Center Inc., Brockton; and a staff member from Centro Presente, Somerville.

Meet James Perry, Executive Director of the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center - (2/17/2009)

James Perry is currently the Executive Director of the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center. Since taking over in 2004, he has turned his agency into one of the most effective non-profits in the city. He is already seen as a leader in Washington as an advocate for equal and affordable housing, and he has spoken around the country about housing policies that can really work for the Gulf Coast. Working with Jewish allies, Mr. Perry is now trying to forge a coalition that can follow in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Joshua Heschel, a coalition that is dedicated to building a united front of progressive African-American and Jewish allies that, together, can make lasting change happen in New Orleans. For a little more information about Mr. Perry, check out some comments made about him by Princeton Professor of African-American Studies Melissa Harris-Lacewell: http://princetonprofs.blogspot.com/2009/01/james-perry-for-new-orleans.html

There were over 200 people there, including Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and lots of talk of having more interefaith dialogue. Bone Marrow Registry Drive - (6/24/2007)

With a few other groups of young Jews, we helped turn out 150 people to get their cheeks swabbed in order to join a bone marrow registry. It was awesome - we got the Klezmer punk band Golem to play and got a JP Lick's ice cream sundae bar that was free for participants. I think over half the people were involved in our house in some way, maybe more, but beyond that the overall event did a great job of letting people know about Moishe House and the other sponsoring groups. It was just really cool to see what we can put together when we collaborate with other groups.

Action for Regional Equity Forum - (5/12/2007)

We participated in Action for Regional Equity's second annual resident forum, where a diverse range of groups -- from City Life/Vida Urbana to Clean Water Action to the Somerville Community Corporation to CHAPA to ACE-EJ -- gathered to share stories about their fights to create and preserve healthy, affordable housing and neighborhoods throughout Greater Boston. Meditation w/Rea - (4/25/2007)

Meditation is not something usually associated with Judaism. But did you know that some of the most revered Jewish sages meditated regularly? The Jewish tradition has much to teach us about meditation as a tool for emotional, mental and spiritual growth.

Margie's Birthday Party - (4/21/2007)

The housemates, my boyfriend Shalom, and my best friend Diana threw me a crazy party, with all the Moishe House regulars there, and some new folks. It turned into a full on dance party, plus bat mitzvah style horah and bump me on a chair, plus party games, including my new gift of "Apples to apples: The Jewish Edition" which really exists, plus there was an impromptu co-ed wrestling match.

Cozy Shabbat Dinner - (4/20/2007)

Ari and I decided to have a small shabbat dinner where we just invited some of our key leaders, to thank them for all their great work. But then it wound up getting a little bigger, because people kept calling us asking what was going on for Shabbat, so we wound up having 16 people. Ravaya Planning Dinner - (3/15/2007)

Jeremy, Gila and I shared a dinner meeting to work on the Ravaya, which is this "Rave for God" thing that people have been doing in NYC, and we are bringing to Boston. Jeremy has already been working on it with another of our leaders, but was having a hard time figuring out how to move forward with the Rebbe guy helping us to put it on, who sort of wants it to be his own thing. So now we have a schedule, a list of people to invite, a budget, and a letter to the Rebbe guy telling him that we could only do this if it were a co-sponsored event that builds our organizations.

Beit Midrash - (3/13/2007)
